Ahoy, and on to new horizons! Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, a subsidiary of TUI Cruises GmbH, is making a strong impression with its new expedition-class ships. With the recent launch of the Hanseatic nature and Hanseatic Inspiration, the cruise line is expanding its luxury cruise offerings.
Expedition-class cruise ships sail to destinations such as the Arctic and Antarctica, as well as the mangrove forests and the Amazon. They are more maneuverable and designed to withstand extreme conditions. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology and the highest level of comfort, they are in no way inferior to the larger models. Above all, adventure-seeking passengers are set to benefit from the opportunity to discover the world’s most remote regions—such as the Arctic and Antarctic wilderness, the tropical wildlife of Central and South America, and the coasts of Asia.

Requirements for the Tekadoor air curtain for use under extreme conditions
The cruise ships on expedition voyages are exposed to particularly extreme weather conditions, such as the polar climate of the Arctic or tropical heat. The Tekadoor air curtains used on these ships must also withstand extremely high or low temperatures, salty air, and humidity while performing their function of separating the outdoor and indoor climates.
How does the air curtain’s housing perform in a harsh, salty environment? How do the fans fare when they have to withstand sub-zero temperatures and salty, corrosive air? How can the air curtains be installed at the ship’s gangway entrances so that they effectively shield against cold or warm air? How can air curtains be visually integrated into a very sophisticated interior design? These are just a few of the questions we’ve been addressing.
We were able to provide the right solution for Hapag Lloyd Cruises’ expedition ships, taking into account the technical and structural requirements.

Desired Scope of Application and Challenge
In areas open to the outside, such as ship entrances and loading zones,
there is at times a heavy flow of people and goods, especially during unloading operations, when the exchange of air masses at different temperatures must be prevented.
When a ship’s entrance is open, the preheated or conditioned air from the interior escapes outside through the upper portion of the entrance. The problem in cold environments: Cold air enters the ship through the lower portion of the doorway. To prevent this, an air curtain unit should be installed at the gangway entrance to block the cold air and warm the incoming air currents.
The problem in tropical climates: Air-conditioned air escapes from the ship at floor level, and warm, unconditioned air enters the ship. The air curtain effectively prevents the exchange of air masses with different temperatures.
The result: A comfortable temperature is maintained at the entrance and inside the ship—whether it's cold or warm outside.
